Indicators in the Backtester

Adding indicators to a replay, what the status chips mean, and the daily compute limit.

Press I or Indicators in the right-hand rail. An indicator only shows what it would have shown on the bar you're on, so it can't leak the future.

The picker

  • Prophets: licensed indicators, split into Partner indicators and Taking Prophets indicators. They run on our servers and their code stays private.
  • Community: indicators members have published from the Indicator Lab, with the author and votes.
  • My builds: your own Indicator Lab library. Build and save one in the Lab first.
  • Build opens the Indicator Lab in a new tab. </> Pine opens the Pine editor, where you paste Pine and press Add to chart.

You can run up to 8 indicators per chart. They're saved with the session. The on-chart legend lets you hide, refresh, open settings, edit the code (not for licensed indicators) or remove each one. When the Lab has a newer version of one you added, an update button appears; nothing updates on its own.

Status chips

ChipWhat it meansWhat to do
licensedA Prophets indicator, calculated on our servers with its code kept private.Nothing.
bar-closeToo heavy to update live, so it updates when each bar closes.Nothing; values land at the close.
daily limitYou've used today's indicator allowance. The script isn't broken.Hover for when it's available again. Don't remove and re-add it.
can't runThe indicator failed. Hover for the reason.Follow the message. Refresh retries.
!The script uses functions that are only estimated here. Hover to see which.Treat those values as approximate.

You may also see short notes such as “catching up…” or “Waiting for a completed candle”. Most clear on their own as the replay moves.

The daily compute limit

Calculating indicators over a replay uses server time, so each member has a daily allowance. When it runs out, affected indicators show daily limit and the tooltip reads “Daily indicator compute limit reached — available again” with the time. They pick up again after the reset.

One message you can fix yourself: “This session reaches further back than this indicator can calculate. Start a fresh session with a later start date to run it.”
