Connecting Tradovate
Link your Tradovate accounts once, then sync their closed trades into the Journal whenever you want.
Tradovate sync imports your closed trades straight from Tradovate, so you don't have to log them by hand. The connection is read-only: it reads your account list and your trade report, and it can never place, change or cancel an order.
Connect and link
- Open Accounts and press Connect Tradovate: on the Tradovate strip before anything is linked, or next to Add account after that.
- Sign in and approve on Tradovate's own page. You never type your Tradovate password on our site, and we never see it.
- Back on Accounts, a panel lists every account on that Tradovate login, marked Demo or Live. Accounts Tradovate reports as inactive, such as a failed evaluation, start unticked.
- For each account you tick, choose New journal account or one of your existing accounts.
- A new account takes the Tradovate name, with “(Tradovate)” added if you already use that name. You can give it a starting balance; blank means 0.
- An existing account keeps its starting balance and earlier trades.
- Two Tradovate accounts can't go into the same journal account.
- Pick the date to Import trades from. It can be up to 12 months back.
- Press the Link button, which shows how many accounts you ticked. Each new link syncs straight away, one after another.
Not now closes the panel without linking anything.
Avoiding duplicates
If you already logged or imported trades from these accounts, the panel warns you: “You already have N trades from this date on that didn't come from a sync.” Those would show up twice. Use the Start on button to begin the day after your last logged trade.
Syncing
Linked accounts sync on their own about every 30 minutes, and the Journal keeps your Tradovate sign-in alive while you have a linked account, so you don't need to reconnect every time it would expire. Choose Sync now in a linked account's options menu whenever you want your latest trades sooner; its card shows when it last synced. Each sync picks up where the last one stopped and imports only what's new. A trade you delete stays deleted, even if a later sync reads it again.
- Each position is one trade, from flat back to flat. An order filled in pieces, adding to a position, and scaling out all count as one trade, at your average entry and exit, with the P&L added up. If you flip from long to short, that's two trades.
- Only closed positions come in. A position that's still open is picked up once it's flat.
- Trade times are shown in Eastern time, like the rest of the Journal.
- P&L comes from Tradovate, which matches fills first in, first out (FIFO).
- Tradovate's P&L is gross. With a Commission set on the journal account (per contract, round turn), each new trade records commission × contracts as its fees and comes in at gross minus those fees; without one, it comes in at the gross with no fees. A later sync never changes a trade already synced. For trades synced before you set a commission, Edit account offers Apply to N synced trades with no fees.
- Trades synced before positions were grouped stay as they are.
- A long history can take more than one run. The card then reads partial sync; choose Continue sync to import the rest.
- A blown account still syncs: open it from the Blown list and choose Sync now. Trades closed after the day you marked it blown aren't imported, and the summary says how many were left out.
- Each sync also checks the accounts on your Tradovate login. A new one, such as a fresh evaluation, brings back the linking panel so you can add it; one you skip with Not now isn't offered again.
- When your firm removes an account from the login, its card reads no longer on this login. Its trades stay in your journal.
After each sync you'll see a summary, for example: “Imported 14 trades. 2 already in your journal.”
Reconnecting
Tradovate's sign-in lasts about 90 minutes. Once it runs out, the card reads reconnect needed and Reconnect in its menu asks you to sign in to Tradovate again. The sync carries on as soon as you're back.
Linked accounts only take synced trades
A linked account gets its trades from Tradovate only, so it isn't offered in Add trade, Quick log, CSV import or as your default account. To add context, open the synced trade and add notes, tags and screenshots there.
If you copy-trade across several accounts, each linked account imports its own fills, so the same trade appears once per account under All accounts. Pick one account on the Overview to see a single copy.
Unlinking
Use Unlink from Tradovate in the account's options menu. The account and its trades stay in your Journal as a manual account.
